Business Overview

Matt Zoll has been painting professionally for twenty years and teaching since 1991. Matt studied under artists Ann Schuler, Will Wilson, and Gerome Atherholt while attending the Schuler School. He was taught the techniques of the Flemish Masters. Matt achieves remarkable color and vibrancy to his paintings by hand-grinding powder pigments with oil. The Flemish medium, also made in the studio, allows the artist to produce a rich luster and an intense luminosity throughout his work. Matt discovered that he had an appreciation for drawing and Still Life; insisting that they are the foundation of all art. Still Life is one of the most valuable lessons in painting. Composition, form, value, and lighting are all crucial fundamental elements needed to pursue other subjects such as Portraits and Figures. Matt's Still Life paintings are rich in color and drama with an intense attention to detail. Students that are willing and dedicated may learn this technique to help push their paintings further in contrast and color. Matt takes pride in teaching and is honored to pass on the traditional lessons of realism. At the age of 18, Matt Zoll began showing his work in galleries and has had many sold-out, one-man shows since that time. Matt currently exhibits his work in Los Angeles, California and Easton, Maryland. Judy Funk is a talented realist painter whose love of art and life is conveyed through her work. Her artistic journey evolved from creative tendencies earlier in life to a later formal education at the Schuler School of Fine Art, where she learned the methods and techniques of the Flemish Old Masters. Judy continued her artistic education by also studying and apprenticing with many talented local artists including Matt Zoll and Carol Lee Thompson. Judy's paintings integrate her passion for art, innate talent and learned techniques into a disciplined form, producing sophisticated works that are inspired by the intricate details so effortlessly portrayed in nature. Judy now assists Matt Zoll in running Zoll Studio School of Fine Art, teaches the 10-14 year olds at the studio, and paints as much as she can. Carol Lee Thompson is a Classical Realist trained in the methods of the Old Masters. She is a full-time professional artist residing in her native Maryland but travels extensively to paint and further her education as an artist. Carol Lee is featured in galleries throughout the country. Her work is part of many corporate and private collections including the Butler Institute of Art and the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland. Her art hangs in Baltimore's City Hall, The Fort McHenry National Shrine, the U.S. State Department, and the Star Pass Resort in Arizona. Carol Lee's exhibits include the Gilcrease and Albuquerque Museums' "Miniature" Shows, Tucson Museum's "Women Artists of the West Show," the C.M. Russell Museum Show and John Pence Gallery's Still Life Shows. She has won many awards including first place in the Oil Painters of America (OPA) On-Line Showcase (Signature) and a Regional OPA Award of Excellence. She has won Best Sporting Art at the International Museum of the Horse, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Show, and the Salmagundi Club in New York. Carol won a Fredrix Spirit of America Award, the Best Painting by a Maryland Artist in the Easton, Maryland, Plein Air Event, and has won 13 awards in international miniature competitions. In the past two prestigious Art Renewal Center (ARC) Salons, Carol has been a finalist five times and received an Honorable Mention. She is a Signature Member of the OPA and has elevated to Associate Member of the American Academy of Equine Art. She is also a member of the The American Society of Marine Artists, the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, and the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society. Carol is published in "Best of America Oil Artists II," "Fresh Flowers: The Best of Flower Painting," and "Art of the American West." She has been featured in many magazine articles. She is a graduate of Towson State University, holds a Masters of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and is a graduate of the Schuler School of Fine Arts, where she still teaches part-time. It is important to note that her traditional training allows her to work with the materials and techniques of the Old Masters. She prepares her surfaces with lead and glue, grinds her own pigments, and paints with Maroger medium. Carol Lee paints a wide range of subject matter including landscape, figurative, equine, still life, and Western themes. She is recognized in the West for her Native American subjects, while the rolling hunt and reservoir country of her home in Phoenix, Maryland, provides lovely landscape locations.
