Business Overview

Our deal: Located at the corner of Baker and McAllister in the Western Addition neighborhood of SF, since September of 2009, Workshop offers affordable DIY classes for adults, taught by awesome local teachers, makers, artists, foodies and DIY'ers. Offering over 50 classes, from the single class for the commitment-phobics, to the more detailed, multi-day classes for those truly desiring to learn their craft. Workshop lo-fi meaning we keep most classes accessible using affordable equipment you can use at home & low cost. We're equipped with a complete silk screening facility, basic sewing machines and endless tools for just about everything DIY you can think of. We also believe in hands on classes, anyone can learn something from a book or online but we create fun experiences with rad teachers. We encourage you to mingle, bust out some rock & roll while you learn and even have a beer fridge. We offer classes, private events & parties, corporate off-sites or we can come to you! Teachers: Our teachers are all local makers or designers, most of whom have recently left their day jobs in the dreams of running their own businesses. All of whom have just a pinch of badass to them (requirement). We equally split profits with teachers, work with them on press & PR to gain exposure, as well as encourage them to promote their businesses to help pursue their dream. So not only are you learning from truly passionate people who just freakin' love what they do, but you're supporting them while they make the jump to running their own business full time. Some of our teachers have moved on to open locations at The Ferry Plaza, Crocker Galleria, open bars & restaurants. Whoot whoot- we're so proud! Philly pop up: We did host a several month pop up in Fishtown, which has since closed but we do work with The Art Dept in Philly, who hosts classes similar to ours. They are an amazing art space that offers classes in sewing, photography and much more. Please check them out at http://www.artdeptpa.com 18& over: We love kids and occasionally host classes for them but we are designed to be an adult space and sometimes have materials or things that are not appropriate for kids or teens. Our slogan drink beer make stuff (and even smoke weed make stuff) is for fun and just encouraging a lifestyle or relaxing, taking a break and making something. We offer classes that are fun, educational and an alternative to going to a bar. We try to create an environment that is casual and comfortable for adults but don't want to offend any parents, so we like to be upfront what we're about and our offerings. Kelly Malone: Co-founder, Teacher, DIY badass, Interior Designer & Carpenter, Artist & Event Planner. Kelly came up with idea of Workshop after growing up with a Dad in the garage building things and a Mom in her Sewing room. After falling in love with everything DIY and never wanting to stick to one hobby, she wanted to open SF's first DIY school where folks could learn without alot of commitment, flirt and just drink beer and make stuff (hellooooo slogan). Kelly won the Guardian's Business Woman of the Year award in 2011 and has won awards from ReadyMade, Dwell and SF Weekly. Her favorite thing to make is anything out of wood and screen-printing. She just finished designing & building Speakeasy Brewery's Taproom and The Bold Italic offices. When Kelly isn't making things or running Indie Mart, she's writing for the Bold Italic, buying power tools, listening to Tame Impala & psych rock or playing pinball with David. contact: kelly@workshopsf.org David Knight: Co-founder, Tech Brain of Workshop, Marketing & Jack of all Trades at Alite Designs. David, otherwise known as DK, grew up in North Carolina going to rock shows and falling for the DIY rock style of handmade show fliers, pressing your own vinyl and indie record labels. A fan of all things SF & creative, DK teamed up with Kelly to help with Indie Marts and loved the handmade spirit and people's enthusiasm for handmade. DK is part of the brains behind Alite Designs, who makes fun camping gear (think sleeping bags you can get it on in) and great bags over in The Mission. Dk can usually be found at shows checking out local garage & metal bands, slaying pinball machines across town and brainstorming with Kelly on how they can takeover the world with DIY. Read more
