Business Overview

Lightwave Glass Studio opened in February of 1974 under the name "The Craftsman," a nod to the Arts and Crafts Movement innovator of the early 20th century, Gustaf Stickley. We are still in the original building, with 1500 sq. ft of retail space downstairs, 1000 sq. ft. of work space upstairs (which was originally living space) and an 800 sq. ft. Quonset hut for storage. The shop sits on the corner of the Old Seward Highway and 94th Avenue, just south of the Dimond Center. When the doors opened in February of 1974, we sold art glass and woodworking supplies, did custom work and taught classes. There were few resources for these items in Anchorage at that time and I was confident that the shop would find a customer base that was looking for these products and services. About eight years after the shop opened, the woodworking side of the business had faded away and the art glass side had taken over. The work space was reconfigured to accommodate the glass studio and although there have been several reconfigurations over the years of the interior space, art glass has been the sole focus for the last twenty eight years or so. In the early 80's the first kiln was installed in the studio, a Denver Glass and Machinery KL 50. Since that time a larger kiln, the KL 60 was added, along with a medium sized ceramic kiln for casting tall objects. Other machinery added over the years were several disc grinders, a set of upright wheels for beveling glass, two lapidary saws and a sandblasting booth. St. Elizabeth waterOver the years I have created windows in traditional and contemporary styles using cast glass, enameled glass, etched glass, or beveled glass employing both lead kame and copper foil techniques of fabrication. Although landscapes and florals are popular, I have also created windows with loons, puffins, ravens, and other Alaskan animals. Contemporary geometrics have been influenced by the cubists as well as German designers like Schaffrath and Schrieter. I have also created traditional geometrics in Art Deco and Victorian styles. Although most custom glass work is for residential settings, I have installed several liturgical works in local churches. Some of the installations were my own design, and some were designed by other artists. Along with custom work, we also produce a number of affordable gift items. These consists of several lines of plates and platters made in the kiln. The "Northern Lights" series are black iridized glass with Alaskan animal motifs. The "Alaska" series are full color platters of Alaska flora designs. We also wholesale these items to qualified retailers.Blueberry Platter Currently we have in stock about 500 different glass colors and or patterns to use in projects or for sale to other artists.
